Advance Care Planning & ReSPECT Authorship

Online via Teams
17th September 2026

Course Overview

Advance care planning is a voluntary process of person-centred discussion between an individual and their care providers about their preferences and priorities for their future care.

When advance care planning is done well, people feel they have had the opportunity to plan for their future care. They feel more confident that their care and treatment will be focused on what matters most to them if, at a future point, they are unable to fully participate in decision making. This can give them a greater sense of control of their own lives.

What will I learn from this course?

  • Knowledge of how to communicate ACP with patients and families and recognise common barriers
  • Knowledge of what ReSPECT is and be able to understand and explain the ReSPECT process
  • Good practice in practicalities and completion of ReSPECT forms

Please note that individual organisations will have guidance on who can and cannot complete ReSPECT forms and whilst this session will give you the knowledge required you will have to check and adhere to the process set by your employer.

Who should attend?

Health and Social Care professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge and improve confidence in the ACP / ReSPECT
process and to enable them to complete forms if appropriate for their role.

Fully funded places available

We are pleased to offer fully funded training places for staff working within the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB) footprint.

These funded places are available to organisations based within the Black Country ICB area (Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley), including:

  • NHS Trusts (acute, community and mental health providers)
  • Primary Care (GP practices, Primary Care Networks and Federations)
  • Social care providers commissioned within the footprint
  • Community and voluntary sector organisations with formal links to, or contracts with, the ICB
  • Independent providers delivering NHS-commissioned care in the area (including care homes)

Organisations outside of the Black Country ICB area are welcome to attend by booking a paid place.

We reserve the right to verify eligibility for funded places. Where applicants are found to be ineligible, a paid place may be offered as an alternative.

To support fair and equitable access across partner organisations, a maximum number of funded places per organisation may be applied to each session. Once this limit is reached, additional applicants may be placed on a waiting list. Where capacity allows, further places may be released closer to the course date.
