Compton Hall, 4 Compton Road West, Wolverhampton, WV3 9DH
15th September 2026

Course Overview

This 2 hour session offers an overview of the current legal framework governing verification of expected death, differences between verification and certification, practical procedures and safe practice, informed by local and national VoED guidance.

What will I learn from this course?

  • The definition, process and procedure of verification of death and certification of death and healthcare professionals’ responsibilities
  • The need for responsive VoED
  • The requirements for verification of a person’s death including documentation, escalation and next steps
  • Care after death

This session will support attendees to practice VoED in their place of work.

Please note a certificate of attendance will be issued but we are unable to assess competence in practice.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at registered nurses band 5 and above who are required to do this as part of their role.

Fully funded places available

We are pleased to offer fully funded training places for staff working within the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB) footprint.

These funded places are available to organisations based within the Black Country ICB area (Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley), including:

  • NHS Trusts (acute, community and mental health providers)
  • Primary Care (GP practices, Primary Care Networks and Federations)
  • Social care providers commissioned within the footprint
  • Community and voluntary sector organisations with formal links to, or contracts with, the ICB
  • Independent providers delivering NHS-commissioned care in the area (including care homes)

Organisations outside of the Black Country ICB area are welcome to attend by booking a paid place.

We reserve the right to verify eligibility for funded places. Where applicants are found to be ineligible, a paid place may be offered as an alternative.

To support fair and equitable access across partner organisations, a maximum number of funded places per organisation may be applied to each session. Once this limit is reached, additional applicants may be placed on a waiting list. Where capacity allows, further places may be released closer to the course date.
